As part of the endeavors of the Secretariat General of the Education Council to get informed of the most remarkable educational initiatives and projects in the Sultanate of Oman, Shaikh Ziad bin Talib Al Mawali, the General Supervisor of the project of Distance Learning of Sharia Sciences at The College of Sharia Sciences, demonstrated a presentation at the premises of the Secretariat General of the Education Council through which he showed the project of distance learning of sharia sciences. The event was attended by some members of the Education Council, specialists of concerned government organs and concerned officials of the Education Council.

The presentation included a brief summary of the system, its main theme, targeted students, stages of development of the learning program, teaching plan, components of the system and some statistics related to applicants and enrolled students. The actual operation of the program started in 2013.

The College of Sharia Sciences capitalized on the experiences of international universities in distance learning of Sharia sciences through using modern technology. The College was very keen on coping with such developments and therefore it adopted the concept of distance learning using the latest technologies, approaches and expertise in this field.

The College of Sharia Sciences intends through this project to facilitate means of learning Sharia sciences in the most effective and latest technological methods and approaches as well as to maintain values and high ideals through scientific research. It also intends to establish a well-integrated scientific environment, contribute to the improvement of higher education, provide learning opportunities and innovative educational services and produce competitive knowledgeable and well-skilled outcomes. The distance learning program enables students from inside and outside Oman, who are interested in e-learning, to continue their studies. These students are entitled to obtain bachelor degrees in Islamic studies and Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh). They can also obtain a diploma in different disciplines of Sharia sciences.

It worth mentioning that 1224 male and female students were enrolled in this program in the first year of its introduction in 2013/2014. In 2016/2017 academic year the number of enrolled students in this program increased to 1592 from inside Oman and from other Arab and Islamic countries.

This program, which uses modern technological applications, is considered as a pioneer model in teaching Sharia sciences and Arabic language. Persons in charge of this program were able to utilize available software to introduce the content of the program in a way that copes with the digital era and reaches beneficiaries everywhere in a very easy manner. The program managed to make use of the latest methods of following up and  evaluation of learners in accordance with a clear informed and systematic approach. Through this approach, the program succeeded in attracting large numbers of learners from inside and outside the Sultanate of Oman. It contributed to introducing Sharia topics and Arabic language courses to a large-scale of learners of different specializations. The program opened new horizons and routes to reach a large sectors of people who are interested and concerned with learning Sharia sciences or who want to expand their knowledge in Arabic language.

At the end of the presentation , questions and queries which were posed by attendees were answered. Suggestions and different opinions which may contribute to the improvement of the program were also exchanged and discussed.
