Muscat: The winners for the 4th Research and Innovations Award in Water Science 2019-2020, which received 95 local and regional applications for various categories of the award, were announced on Sunday.
The award seeks to enhance the role of scientific research, encourage and support distinguished innovative initiatives to find solutions to water issues and enhance awareness of the water field in the Sultanate.
The event was organised by The Research Council (TRC), in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science (SQHCCS).
The Research and Innovations Award in Water Science comprises of two categories; the Scientific Publication Category and the Innovation Category. For the PhD holders for the Scientific Publication Category, “Removing Heavy Metals through Different Types of Soils and Marble Powder found in Oman” by Aref Wazwaz from Dhofar University and “An Artificial Intelligence Approach for the Stochastic Management of Coastal Aquifers” by Chefi Triki from Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar, both won in this category.
As for the young researchers (non-PhD holders) for the Scientific Publication Category, “Oblique Porous Composite as Evaporating “Cap”: Do Desert Dunes Preserve Moisture by Capillary Barriers and Tilt of Their Slopes?” by Afrah Al Shukaili from Sultan Qaboos University and “Real-Time Measurement of Flash-Flood in a wadi area by LSPIV and STIV” by Mahmood Al Mamari from Kyoto University in Japan, both won for this category.
In addition to the Scientific Publication Category, the Innovation Category consists of two divisions as well; Innovation and Young Innovator (school students from grade 10 to 12). The first-place and third-place for the Innovation division were withdrawn this year, while “Smart Water and Wastewater Monitoring System for All-purpose Applications” by Ali Mousawi and Tahereh Jafari from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) bagged the second-place position.
For the Young Innovator division, the first place went to “inFlush” by Nawaf Salim Amer Al Hinai from Abu Al Mu’thar School (A’Dakhiliyah), second place to “Electrochemical Purification Box” by Emad Amer Salim Al Ramimi and Al Bara Khalfan Hameed Al Badwi from Azzan Bin Tamim School (North A’Sharqiyah), third place to “Smart Detector” by Talal Bader Al Shehhi and Abdullah Muneer Al Shehhi from Muhammadiyah School (Musandam), fourth place to “Smart Tap Application” by Eyaad Amer Al Aamri and Jasim Mosah Al Balushi from Al Amal School for the Deaf (Muscat), and the fifth and last place went to “Green treatment of water contaminated with heavy elements using reed and Omani Adh Dhafrah plants” by Shahad Saif Al Sharji and Fatma Suleiman Al Salmi from Hafsa Bint Omar School (A’Dakhiliyah).
