MUSCAT - Oman wants to encourage school students to gain hands-on knowledge about agriculture and fish production, thereby ensuring a skilled workforce taking the sector further ahead. The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, has launched a project called ‘My School Producer’, where over 5,500 school students across four governorates will be trained in agricultural and fisheries specialties.

An official at MoAF, said, “The project aims to instil the importance of food security in students and train them to engage in works related to agriculture and fisheries specialties and acquire the skills required to join the labour market.”

He added, “More than 5,500 students from 11 schools in the governorates of Dakhliyah, Muscat, north and south Batinah will benefit from this project.”

The project also aims to produce vegetables such as cucumber, lettuce, etc and develop fish farming in fresh water. The project consists of training, qualifying and mentoring programmes for teachers in selected schools.

“The ministry will provide greenhouses that allow students to apply knowledge that they have learnt in different curricula. The project will contribute to the empowerment of students and encourage them to establish student companies,” the official said.
