Muscat: Primary students in Musandam were taught the importance of Earth Hour by a special UNESCO team based in the governorate.

UNESCO Sukaina, which are based in Sakina Bint Al Hussein School in the town of Dibba, helped teach young Omani students the importance of not wasting electricity and water, in order to conserve resources for future generations.

“The UNESCO team at Sakina Bint Al Hussein School in cooperation with the Environment and Climate Affairs Department in Dibba took part in Earth Hour to spread awareness of the importance of reducing electricity and water consumption and fighting pollution,” said a UNESCO Sukaina spokesperson. “What benefits the planet benefits all of us”

“The teachers of Sakina Bint Al Hussein Primary School were helped by the UNESCO team to share and discuss the Earth Hour event, as well as the importance of taking action now and changing our behaviour towards the environment in the future.”

“UNESCO staff at the school were keen to talk about this global environmental event and to highlight the need to raise awareness of the threat of climate change and reduce the consumption of electricity,” added the organisation.

UNESCO Sukaina is a part of the larger UNESCO associated schools programme network in Oman (UNESCO ASPNet Oman), which collaborates with the government to help provide better quality education to students in the Sultanate.

Omani citizens were also pleased to see UNESCO working hand-in-hand with local communities to help them spread awareness.

Mohammed Al Futaisi said, “All thanks and appreciation to you for your work to serve the dear nation and people, God reward you for the wonderful work and effort to spread awareness in the community,” and Rashid Al Shahi added, “God bless you and in your quest and I wish you success always.”
