MUSCAT - The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) announced this year’s Inter-College Environment Public Speaking Competition (ICEPSC) during a press conference held at the Cultural Club in Qurm on Monday.

The event which will be held on October 22 and 23 will have 40 shortlisted teams from 19 colleges and universities across the sultanate debate with like-minded peers with regards to environmental conservation. The winners will get a chance to represent the country at the regional competition in Dubai in November.

This year’s competition is expected to attract more than 168 students.

Focussing on developing a deep appreciation of the environment by understanding the challenges through enquiry and dialogue, teams are expected to research and debate on a number of topics including ‘Sustainable Built Environment: Are we achieving it?’, ‘Impact of Fashion and Make-up Industry on the Environment’, ‘The future of Agriculture in the Middle East’ and ‘The Impact of Wars on the Environment’.

Four winning teams will go on to represent the sultanate in the regional finals and compete with students from a number of Arab nations in Dubai on November 27 and 28.

Dareen Mehdi, board member at ESO said, “This competition is more than just winning a debate. It is an interactive, hands-on platform that allows students to truly understand the impact we have on the environment. From the effects of our habits to how we can conserve and become eco-friendly.

Through their research and discussions during their participation in the competition we will learn how to make a change and make these students ambassadors of environment. The competition has made a positive impact on hundreds of Omani students who have learnt how to be more environmentally responsible.”

Najeeb al Harthy, director general and chief operating officer of Mitsui E&P Middle East B V, said, “As a company within the community we have a responsibility to preserving the environment.
