The Education Council on Monday held its first meeting of the year, led by Dr Rawya bint Saud al Busaidiya, Minister of Higher Education and Deputy Chairperson of the Council.

The Council discussed the topics on its agenda, including a number of issues prepared by the Secretariat-General. Within the context of the contribution to the five-year Ninth Development Plan to absorb the national workforce in the labour market, and the extent of the harmonisation of education and training outcomes with the needs of economic activities targeted by the plan. During the meeting, a presentation focusing on the promising economic sectors in the ninth Five-Year development plan, the future directions of the output of education and the requirements of development and the labour market was screened.


The council discussed the entry requirements for Educational Qualification programme at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) and the private universities, to be offered to meet the need for teachers in the Sultanate in various educational disciplines. The council instructed to revise the requirements currently in place for enrolment in the programme. The Council reviewed the report of the Ministry of Higher Education on the results of the Special Task Force to implement the recommendations of the Third Symposium of Sultan Qaboos Academic Chairs — (Tokyo, 2014) on water, and related to the higher education sector. The Council directed to conduct a revision of the results that came out of the report to find appropriate operational mechanisms and to put the recommendations of the symposium into practice.


The Council also reviewed the report prepared by the ministry about the results of graduates survey for 2015, which was conducted on the graduates of the academic years 2009/2010 and  2012/2013, to see the most prominent indicators related to scientific disciplines and the required skills and competencies in the labour market.
