MUSCAT: The special committee formed at the State Council to study “the language policies of the Sultanate, its realities, challenges and mechanisms to develop and activate them” continued deliberations on Tuesday.

The study aimed at examining the use of Arabic in the Sultanate and its challenges, and seeking to develop appropriate proposals to highlight the status of the language and promote its use in various government and private institutions, in addition to proposing a law or official document for the protection of the Arabic language and empowering it in official practices in the Sultanate.

At the fourth meeting of the fourth annual session of the sixth period, headed by Dr Rayya bint Salim al Mantheri, the committee hosted a number of experts interested in Arabic language from the Ministry of Education and the National Records and Archives Authority.

The committee discussed with them many aspects of the study, including Oman’s efforts to serve the Arabic language, and the efforts of Omani institutions and scholars to revive the language.

It also discussed the national programmes and initiatives in this area, the role of the Arabic language in the economy and the knowledge industry, and addressing international experiences in the service of the mother tongue.
